Exploring Wellness

Exploring Wellness

Mind Body & Breath

Since travelling to India in the mid 1980s I have been interested in yoga and meditation and since then I have conducted a wide range of research projects on yoga, meditation, massage and various breathing techniques that range from population surveys and clinical trials to laboratory-based studies and systematic reviews.

Food, Herbs & Natural Medicine

My research on food, herbs and natural supplements began in earnest when I took up co-authoring the textbook Herbs and Natural Supplements: An evidenced-based guide with Lesley Braun in 2001. Since then I have done extensive research into organic food as well as herbs and supplements such as garlic, rosehip, dunaliella salina, ubiquinol and tulsi.

Integrative Medicine

I have been involved in integrating complementary medicine into mainstream practice for more than 3 decades and have done research on attitudes to complementary medicine amongst medical students, general practitioners and hospital doctors as well as complementary medicine use by different patient group

Water, Bathing & Energetics

Water and bathing has become an increasing focus of my academic career as well as my personal life. I am now conducting research on hot springs bathing, sauna bathing and ice bathing (along with the Wim Hof Method) and am leading a research group on the ‘bathing biome’ that aims to eliminate the need for chlorine in commercial hot springs and aquatic centres.

Lifestyle & Detoxification

I have always been interested in a healthy lifestyle and was involved in running health retreats for Monash medical students in the 1990s. I am now conducting research on the health benefits of health and lifestyle retreats along with the ways to reduce exposure to toxic environmental chemicals and detoxify from past exposures using simple lifestyle measures.

Leading-Edge Research

Current research includes surveys on the use of saunas, hot springs, health retreats and the Wim Hof Method along with studies on: assessing environmental chemical exposures; the lifestyle practices of world champion athletes; the impact of detoxification measures; the cognitive benefits of herbal teas that include tulsi, turmeric and hemp oil (cannabidiol); and the bathing biome.
